I'll be teaching a 5 day mosaic workshop at Cycling Salamander Gallery in Charlevoix, MI in August. To sign up for the class, call the gallery at 231.547.2333. Registration for the class must be by July 15.
Classes will be held 10 am to 4 pm, every Friday from July 22 to August 19. The class fee of $243 per person covers the cost of all materials, including the wrought iron table shown here, vitreous glass mosaic tile, grout, etc. All necessary tools will be provided for use during the class.
This project-based course culminates in the creation of a beautiful 19" round mosaic table of your own design. The focus of this intermediate to advanced level class will be achieving pictorial representation with vitreous glass tile and how to train yourself to see as an artist and designer. The artist will be working one-on-one with each student to help them express their vision to the best of their ability. Students should bring ideas or drawings to the first class.
Those who already have a grounding in the basics of mosaic will benefit from advanced topics, such as designing for glass mosaic, techniques for achieving depth and form, and andamento (using the flow of tiles to enhance the overall image). Beginners are welcome to try their hand as well and will receive enough individual attention to be confident of creating a high quality mosaic. Basic mosaic techniques of cutting, setting and grouting tile will be covered in the introduction.
It's worth noting that the cost of the class is less than half the price you might expect to pay for a finished mosaic table of this size. And of course, you can't put a price on the satisfaction of knowing that you are the artist who created it!
Imagine how you'll feel when you take home your finished table and can say, "I did that!"
