More installation pics… It's taking a bit more time to go around the flames with the bacckground tiles than I had anticipated. Mostly because I feel strongly about maintaining the best approximation of a grid as I can with the white tiles. It's also difficult to spread the mortar in the small spaces between the tongues of flame. I'm mostly using my fingers to spread it because the tools won't fit into such a small area, and the ceramic tile used for the sun is much higher than the glass background tile. When I grout the finished mural, I'll be able to even that out, but it's more of a barrier to installation than I had anticipated.
Still, things are moving along. Mya is almost done with the recreation of Neptune, and once the flames and Saturn have been pieced in, the background will only take a couple hours or less to fill in. I'm going to work late on the install tonight, but I have a meeting with John Pounds at Chicago Public Art Group tomorrow, so there's a good chance I will get less done on the project after the meeting.
