Spice Up Your Garden With A Bottle Fence

Bottle Fence

While I was making the Bottle Tree, another idea came to me… what about using bottles in a fence design? I arranged them at different heights to play with the idea of musical notation. This first version was kind of a quick sketch and I'm pretty happy with the result. It's a nice way to add some color to a yard or garden.

I'd like to do another version of this fence with a heavier line weight and with the bottles placed in separate frames that are juxtaposed at various heights. I feel that would give the piece more presence. Here's a pretty quick sketch of what I'm thinking about… it's not perfect (drawings rarely are for me, since I prefer to work out the visuals with the actual material).

Using thicker steel pipe might work better by allowing me to snug the neck of the bottles into the tube, rather than mounting them over steel rods as I did in the photo. The overall look I'd like to get with the final version would be similar to the first major fence project I did, which incorporated a bunch of radiator sections from the building site. Here's a picture of that fence:

The Scrap Fence above is pretty tall (almost seven feet at it's highest points). I think the bottle fence would work better as a low garden style fence… maybe three feet at the highest point. There are more detail pics of this fence on my portfolio site if you'd like to check them out.

Anyway, I like the idea and I'll probably get around to playing with it again at some point this summer. If it appeals to you, and you think you might like to commission something like this, by all means drop me a line or call.
