I've added a bunch of new work to my Etsy Store. It's not a perfect interface or solution… but it's one of the easier ways to get art online and for sale at the moment. I'm working on a huge article for TypePad Hacks right now that examines most of the available ecommerce solutions for blogs. In the process, I've been building examples of each, and hence got caught up in posting stuff to Etsy.
I also like some aspects of RightCart (which I've added to the sidebar here) but the inability to change the number of items, size of the store widget and the order of items displayed is almost as big a problem as the ginormous self promo ad that they insert before the items are listed… Fix those things and it would be a brilliant service.
So far I've written up and made (or found) examples for PayPal, Google Checkout, Etsy, eSnips, RightCart, Amazon aStore, PrestoGifto and PopShops. Still to go are: Shopify, Terapad, Zlio, Chitika ShopLlinc, Bravisa, and then maybe: CafePress, Zazzle, and Tumri Cornerstore.
If anyone knows of hosted services that add an ecommerce function to blogs which aren't listed above please drop me a line. So far my feeling is that no one quite has anything that really thrills me although many of them have parts of the UI and functionality down perfect. PrestoGifto has the best catalog building interface, hands down, but only works with items from CafePress. Etsy's catalog generator is pretty good, but fails me bigtime because it only shows the most recently added items and can't be constrained to a specific item or category. For instance, I blogged about the masks I've been making and embedded a nice set of thumbnails with liks in my last post… But then when I added a lot of new firebowls to Etsy, the post about masks ends up showing the firebowls instead. I'd love to have the same feature, but be able to feature one or more items in a blog post and know that they'd remain on topic.
Meanwhile, if you'd like to see a whole bunch of new designs in the Fire Line, please do visit me on Etsy!
